Interview # 2

Gretchen sat stony faced. “I’m not sure why I’m here.”

Chase rolled his eyes, still watching behind the two-way mirror. “How many times must we explain to that woman? I don’t know why Nat considers her a friend. She’s a pain in the ass.”

In the interview room, Theo leaned over, giving her what Chase was sure was the man’s best “I’m a sympathetic asshole, please talk to me” smile. “We need to clear up a few things about the day Stanley Kirkman died. Could you tell us what you did that morning?”

“Well, I woke up at six,” she began, sarcasm dripping as she proceeded to account for every single second. “First I pushed the covers back and then I got out of bed.”

“I’m sure Natalie would say they bonded,” Ben replied, staring into the interview room as Gretchen continued her recitation of how she used the bathroom in stunning detail. “You know how it can go. Even if you don’t like a person, you can feel bonded after surviving something with them.”

“Like you and Leo?” He wasn’t sure why he’d asked the question, but it had popped out and he couldn’t take it back.

Ben turned his way. “Yeah, I guess, although I always liked Leo.”

“Enough to share a woman with him.” Yeah, he shouldn’t have said that either.

“We didn’t exactly share Ada. We both had relationships with her.” He turned back. Gretchen had gotten to the walking portion of her morning. Apparently there was a lot to complain about in the brief walk from her apartment to the spa.

“Natalie insists on taking the stairs. I mean there’s a perfectly good elevator right there,” Gretchen explained.

“I don’t think we need you to be quite so detailed about the earlier part of the day,” Case was saying. “Let’s talk about the hour before Kirkman died.”

“Do you know how hard stairs can be on knees?” If Gretchen heard him, she didn’t show it. “Does Nat even care?”

“And now I’m one hundred percent sure you were right,” Ben said quietly. “I wasn’t in love with her. I’m starting to get worried I’m in love with Natalie, and there won’t be any going back because this time we’re both in it.”

He didn’t reply, but felt a satisfied smile curl his lips up.

Yes, this time it was right.
